Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon could see off-road variants

GM could introduce an off-road, Ford Raptor-fighting version of the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon pickups

The 2011 Chevy Colorado Rally Concept would make an excellent starting point for an off-road variant of the new Colorado and GMC Canyon

With the release of the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon mid-size pickups, rumours are already swirling over GM introducing an off-road variant aimed at the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor.

According to GM Authority (hat tip to AutoGuide ), GM is considering a Raptor fighter built on the Colorado and Canyon platform, as opposed to the one underpinning the Silverado and Sierra.

The reason? Packaging; the Colorado and Canyon might be smaller, but they're considerably lighter than its bigger brothers. And as we all know, a low curb weight is one of the many keys to maximizing performance, whether it's a supercar or a hardcore, off-road pickup.

That being said, the same report suggests Ford is also considering a successor to the Raptor based on the next-generation F-150. If it sees the light of day, you can bet on it being even lighter, given the next-gen F-150s extensive use of aluminum throughout its chassis and body.

GM hasn't offered any concrete details, but if the rumours hold true, the Chevrolet Colorado Rally Concept from 2011 would make for an excellent starting point.
